Born into a family steeped in traditional art and culture, Kalyan Mukherjee’s journey from learning tabla in the Lucknow gharana tradition to mastering the sarod under the guidance of legendary maestros has shaped him into a virtuoso. His narrative-driven approach beautifully captures life’s moments through intricate electrifying performances, making him a major force on the world music stage.
Kalyan Mukherjee was born in Calcutta, India, into a family deeply rooted in traditional art and culture. His father, Sri Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee, was a violinist and a disciple of the late sarod maestro Ustad Bahadur Khan. Kalyan began his musical journey learning tabla in the Lucknow gharana tradition as a child. He later took up sarod lessons with Sri Sachin Pal, a student of the late Shyam Ganguly, who himself studied under Baba Alauddin Khan.
Kalyan’s talent flourished under the guidance of Ustad Bahadur Khan, the blessed nephew and disciple of Ustad Alauddin Khan and cousin of the legendary Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. After Ustad Bahadur Khan’s passing, Kalyan continued to hone his skills under Pandit Ajoy Sinha Roy, another disciple of Baba Alauddin Khan of the Senia Maihar gharana.
