Shana Sood’s Artistic Homecoming: A Journey of Identity and Belonging
INDIAN-AMERICAN ARTIST SHANA SOOD IS SET TO MAKE A HEARTFELT RETURN TO HER HOMELAND WITH TWO SOLO EXHIBITIONS TITLED “HOMECOMING”, CURATED BY GEORGINA MADDOX.
The first show will grace the iconic Bikaner House in New Delhi from April 4th to 8th, 2025, followed by the second at the Arpana Caur Art Gallery from April 10th to 20th, 2025. These exhibitions promise to be a celebration of her artistic evolution and an exploration of deeply personal themes.
Born and raised in New Delhi, Shana Sood embarked on a new chapter of her life when she moved to the United States in 2005. A self-taught artist, she discovered her creative voice in her late thirties, crafting a unique style that beautifully bridges her Indian roots and her experiences in the U.S. Through her captivating artworks, Sood navigates profound themes of identity, belonging and cultural duality. Her intimate portraits offer a window into the human connection, capturing the delicate balance between personal identity and the modern world.
“Homecoming” is more than an artistic showcase—it’s a soulful tribute to Shana Sood’s journey of self-discovery and the vibrant cultural tapestry that shapes her work.
The Colors of Connection: Shana Sood’s Vibrant Canvas
Renowned artist Shana Sood’s paintings radiate with the vivid hues of India—deep reds, bright yellows, and rich blues—that mirror the joyous tapestry of festivals, weddings and traditional art forms she cherished growing up. Among these, the deep red holds a special place in her heart, embodying the essence of home and the bittersweet pull of nostalgia. Her artistic palette speaks not only to her Indian heritage but also to the universal longing of the diaspora, capturing the pursuit of what was left behind yet forever lingers in spirit.
Her art carries an aspirational romanticism, weaving tales of identity and memory into a vibrant narrative that resonates with audiences across borders.
As Shana Sood herself reflects, “Returning to India with my art feels like coming full circle. ‘Homecoming’ is both a personal and artistic journey, a reflection of the lives and stories that have shaped me across two continents.”
A Celebration of Art and Heritage
“Sood’s work has been featured in prominent New England galleries, including the North Shore Arts Association, Arlington Center for the Arts, and Marblehead Arts Association. In 2021, she became an anchor artist at The Patriot Place Art Gallery near Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts,” says the organizers of the show.
Shana Sood’s remarkable journey from New England galleries to India’s vibrant art scene signifies a meaningful crossroads in her career.
Her works, often inspired by women she has encountered, transcend cultural boundaries, presenting fresh perspectives in contemporary portraiture.
