HEAVY RAIN LASHED KERALA
Twenty people were killed as heavy rain lashed the south and central regions of Kerala on 16 October 2021 causing landslides and flooding in the state.
Kottayam and Idukki districts witnessed massive destruction and a Red Alert was sounded for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki and Thrissur districts.
An orange alert was sounded for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts.
The Meteorological department has warned of widespread heavy rains in the state due to low pressure over Arabian Sea.
Authorities have warned that people living in low-lying areas and on the banks of rivers should move to safer places as per the directions. All are advised to avoid visiting tourist places in view of the heavy rain in the state.
“The intensity of rain has reduced and it is expected to weaken tonight, but rain may intensify heavily after two days again”, the mateorological department reported.
National Weather Forecasting Centre, IMD, Ministry of Earth Sciences released the MID-DAY Bulletin at 1400 Hrs on 18 October, 2021 and forecasted that a fresh spell of easterly wave is likely to affect the south peninsular India from 20 October and cause fairly widespread to wide spread rainfall with isolated heavy falls over Kerala, Mahe, Tamilnadu, Pondicherry and Karnataka during 20th – 22nd of October.
