Santiniketan’s Legacy: A Tribute to Kiran Dixit Thacker

Birla Academy of Art and Culture in Kolkata hosted the solo exhibition, “Glimpses of Santiniketan,” featuring the remarkable works of Kiran Dixit Thacker, an eminent sculptor and a senior living student of legendary sculptor Ramkinkar Baij. 

This exhibition started on 2nd April 2025 and continued till 6th of April, 2025, and showcased a stunning collection of sculptures and drawings inspired by the artistic and philosophical essence of Santiniketan.

The event opened to art enthusiasts and admirers alike, offering them an opportunity to immerse in Kiran Dixit Thacker’s extraordinary creations.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Jayanta Sengupta, Director of Alipore Museum. The inauguration ceremony was graced by distinguished guests, including Mrinal Ghosh, Soumitra Das and Pankaj Panwar, and brought together a celebration of art and culture. It highlighted Kiran Dixit Thacker’s artistic journey, inspired by the renowned sculptor Ramkinkar Baij, and her dedication to preserving and enhancing Indian sculpture traditions.

Kiran Dixit Thacker: A Lifelong Journey of Artistic Brilliance

Kiran Dixit Thacker’s journey as an artist is both inspiring and remarkable. Her academic foundation began with a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Visva Bharati, complemented by a diploma in Fine Arts from Kala Bhavan in 1968. These formative years were pivotal in shaping her artistic perspective, blending philosophical depth with creative expression.

After spending three decades in London, eminent artist Kiran Dixit Thacker returned to her alma mater, Kala Bhavan, in 2000. Her homecoming marked the beginning of a new chapter in her artistic pursuit. Under the guidance of the sculpture department, she enrolled in a certificate program that reignited her passion for sculpting. This renewed creative vigor led to the production of a stunning array of sculptures that showcase her unique style and dedication to the craft.

Dr. Janak Jhankar Narzary, President of Santiniketan Kala Bhavan Praktoni, observed that Kiran’s prolific output of sculptures and her successful exhibitions in major cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Mumbai have earned her widespread acclaim. Her works, celebrated on a national scale, reflect her ability to balance tradition with innovation, telling timeless stories through art.

Kiran’s journey exemplifies resilience, creativity, and the enduring impact of art. Her dedication continues to inspire the artistic community and reinforce the significance of sculpture in preserving cultural heritage.
