THEATRE OF THE OPPRESSED
AGATHI/ KALAA DHARI
26 – 31 DECEMBER 2022
The Theatre of the Oppressed, a participatory theatre that fosters democratic and cooperative forms of interaction conducts a workshop on 26 -31 December 2022.
“It is a ‘rehearsal theatre’ practiced by ‘spect-actors’ (not spectators) who have the opportunity to both act and observe, engendering processes of dialogue and critical thinking. It is an interactive mode of behaviour which stimulates evaluation and imaginative responses. In the Theatre of the Oppressed, the theatrical act is experienced as a conscious intervention, as a rehearsal for social action rooted in a collective analysis of shared problems,” says the Organisers of the Workshop.
The Theatre of the Oppressed is a participatory form of theatre developed by Brazilian drama theorist, political activist and theatre practitioner Augusto Boal. He is ‘the best- known and most respected Brazilian theatre practitioner abroad’ who won the UNESCO Pablo Picasso Medal in 1994. He was awarded the “Career Achievement Award” by the Association of Theatre in Higher Education at their national conference in Chicago, Illinois.
