Drishya Kashi, an Exhibition which showcases Varanasi’s rich traditions of visual imagery was inaugurated by Prof. Sudhir K. Jain, Vice Chancellor, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on 5 February 2022.

The Exhibition features great paintings, sculptures and other artworks of 46 Varanasi  artists to mark the celebration of the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.

“The works in Drishya Kashi are intriguing and enlightening, engaging but not impulsive concerns and implying responsibilities, educational and self-contained.  One is expected to immerse in them, as one would in the holy Ganga, to experience the unknown and realise the truth of life, which is embodied in a void, a sense of here and nowhere, now and nothingness,” says  Dr. Pradosh Mishra,  Ph. D, Fulbright Nehru Fellow and Professor of History of Art, Banaras Hindu University, the Curator of the show.

The art works of eminent artists Manmath Kumar Das, a disciple of Nandalal Bose, who spent his entire life recording the Ghats of Varanasi, Mahendra Kumar Singh ‘Neelam’  who studied wash and tempera paintings under the supervision of eminent artist Kshitindranath Majumdar and  Jai Sankar Mishra,  painter and textile designer, trained by Jagannath Muralidhar Ahivasi,  the founder member of the Faculty of Visual Arts are the highlights of the Show.

The Exhibition, Drishya Kashi – The visual imagery of Varanasi also exhibits the works of other famous  artists like Satyendra Baoni, Nitin Dutt, Hiralal Prajapati and Suresh K. Nair portraying colourful festivals, crowded Ghats, akhadas, dilapidated narrow lanes and many ancient temples that reflect  diversities, mysteries and spirituality of the age old ancient traditions and culture of our country.

The exhibition will have art talks, dialogues/discussions, curatorial walks etc spread over a month as a peripheral activity.
