Vaggeyakara Day: Honoring Muthuswamy Dikshitar’s Musical Legacy

Every year, music lovers and cultural enthusiasts come together to celebrate Vaggeyakara Day, an occasion dedicated to legendary composers who have shaped the world of Indian classical music. This year, the event shines a spotlight on Muthuswamy Dikshitar, one of the revered trinity of Carnatic music. 

Hosted by Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts & Sangeetha Sabha, Mumbai and Sri Shanmukhananda Bharatiya Sangeetha Vidyalaya and Natya Vidyalaya, the event promises an evening filled with soul-stirring performances and rich musical heritage.

At the heart of this celebration is the veena, an instrument synonymous with Dikshitar’s compositions. Renowned artist Kalaimamani Smt. Jayalakshmi Sekhar will take center stage, enchanting audiences with her mastery over the veena, accompanied by renowned musicians  Rohit Prasad on the mridangam and J. Swaminathan on the ghatam. Together, they will bring to life the timeless compositions of Dikshitar, capturing the essence of his genius and devotion.

This grand event will take place at the Padma Ranga Chamber Hall on Friday, 25th April 2025, at 6:30 PM. 

It is not just a musical gathering but a tribute to one of the greatest composers in Indian classical history. For connoisseurs and new listeners alike, this celebration is an opportunity to experience the depth of Dikshitar’s music and witness a beautiful blend of melody, rhythm, and devotion.

WORKSHOP- Dancing Notes & The Veena: A Journey Through Gamakas

Music is more than melody—it is expression, emotion, and technique. The upcoming workshop, “Dancing Notes & The Veena,” celebrates the artistry of gamakas and other intricate techniques that bring veena compositions to life. 

Organized by Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts & Sangeetha Sabha and Sri Shanmukhananda Bharatiya Sangeetha Vidyalaya and Natya Vidyalaya, Mumbai, this session features the renowned Kalaimamani Smt. Jayalakshmi Sekhar, an expert in the veena.

Taking place at Padma Ranga Chamber Hall on Saturday, 26th April 2025, at 5:00 PM, this immersive workshop will introduce participants to the beauty of gamakas—the delicate oscillations and ornamentations that define Carnatic music. 

Smt. Jayalakshmi Sekhar will share her wisdom, guiding musicians and enthusiasts alike through the nuances of veena playing.
