THE MAESTRO OF TABLA: PANDIT RAVINDRA YAVAGAL
Pandit Ravindra Yavagal, a distinguished tabla virtuoso, has left an indelible mark on the world of music with his exceptional talent and dedication. From being a child prodigy, featured many programs on All India Radio, and to receiving prestigious awards like the ‘Rajyotsava Award’ and ‘Kendra Sangeet Natak Akademi,’ his journey is a testament to his artistic brilliance. As a soloist and accompanist, he has performed with legendary artists, embraced fusion music, and contributed to the betterment of music education. His legacy continues to inspire and elevate the world of classical music.
Considered a child prodigy, Pandit Ravindra Yavagal was regularly featured in children’s programs on All India Radio, Dharwad, at the tender age of five. He gave his first solo performance at the prestigious Sawai Gandharva Music Festival in Kundgol at the age of ten, accompanied by maestro Pandit Appa Jalagaonker on harmonium. Born on 27 November 1959, in Hubli, Karnataka, to Smt. Parvatibai and the late Sri. Ramachandra Yavagal, he was introduced to music by his father at the age of four. Initially trained in tabla by Sri. Veeranna Kamkar in Hubli, he later came under the tutelage of Pandit Sheshagiri Hanagal, a renowned tabla artist from Dharwad, who closely mentored him. He also received guidance from Pandit Lalji Gokhale, a disciple of the legendary tabla maestro Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa.

Pandit Ravindra Yavagal, a ‘Top Rank’ artiste of All India Radio and a postgraduate in music from Indira Kala Vishwavidyalaya-Khairagarh, is one of India’s most sought-after tabla artists. His skillful techniques and creative style, honed through rigorous training and sincere practice, have captivated audiences nationwide. His contributions to classical music are celebrated on prestigious occasions throughout the country.
Recognized both as a soloist and a sensitive accompanist, he has performed with many prominent vocalists and instrumentalists, including Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur, Dr. Gangubai Hangal, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia.
FUSION AND INNOVATION IN MUSIC
As a creative artist, Pandit Ravindra Yavagal has embraced fusion-oriented and experimental music, sharing platforms with South Indian maestros like Dr. Balamuralikrishna, Prof. T.N. Krishnan, and Sri. Umayalapuram K. Shivaraman. His performances on radio and television, along with prestigious broadcasts, have captivated audiences. His lecture demonstrations in percussion at reputed institutions have drawn large crowds. Touring extensively, he has performed with renowned artists across the USA, France, Egypt and Hong Kong.
Pandit Yavagal’s solo tabla album, “Gati – Soul of Rhythm,” along with many other classical albums, showcases his innovative spirit and dedication to music.
CONTRIBUTIONS AND LEGACY OF PANDIT RAVINDRA YAVAGAL
The Karnataka Government nominated Pandit Ravindra Yavagal as an honorary member of the Karnataka Sangeetha Nritya Academy from 2002 to 2004. He was also on the advisory committee of the Directorate of Textbooks, Government of Karnataka, and worked as a scrutinizer for Talavadya textbooks for proficiency level students. A proficient tutor, Pandit Yavagal has been training youngsters, helping them carve a niche in both classical and semiclassical genres.
His disciples recently released a documentary video, “The Divine Hands of Tabla,” as a token of love and gratitude, featuring his life, experiences and achievements.
In 2006, Pandit Yavagal established the public charitable trust “Shri Rama Kala Vedike®” in memory of his father, late Sri. Ramachandra Yavagal. The trust conducts various socio-cultural and musical activities, promotes young talent, and offers financial assistance to needy musicians. Pandit Yavagal continues to serve as the managing trustee.
He also served as a senior member of All India Radio operations in Bangalore, providing significant services for over 37 years as a Selection Grade Artist.
RECOGNITIONS AND HONORS
In recognition of his talent, valuable contribution and service to the field of music, Pandit Ravindra Yavagal has received numerous honors and felicitations from various organizations. He was honored with the title ‘Naada Nidhi’ by Kalachetana, Gadag and awarded the ‘Chandrahasa Prashasti’ by the Sangeet Seva Samiti, Soraba. The prestigious ‘Rajyotsava Award’ was bestowed upon him by the Government of Karnataka.

Pandit Yavagal has been honored with several titles, including ‘Sangeeta Kala Tapasvi’ by Sri Purandara Thyagaraja Aradhanotsava Samiti, Mysuru, and ‘Tabala Vaadhana Vaaridhi’ by Akhila Karnataka Ganayogi Swara Sanidhya.
He received the title ‘Taala Vidya Bhushana’ from Vishwakarma Ekadandagi Matha, Yadagiri, and ‘Nagalingashri’ from Nagalinga Swami Matha, Navalgunda. The Aryabhata Cultural Organisation, Bengaluru, awarded him the ‘Aaryabhata International Award’.

Further accolades include ‘Laya Bhaskara’ by the Hora Foundation, Sirsi, and the ‘Smt. Krishna Hangal Rashtriya Puraskar’ by Hangal Music Foundation, Hubli. He was honored with the title ‘Laya Kala Brahma’ by Arunodaya Kala Kendra, Sirsi, Karnataka, and ‘Sangeeta Shiromani’ by Mahamahopadhyaya Pt. R. V. Sheshadri Gavai Punya Smruti Samiti, Bengaluru, Karnataka.
Pandit Yavagal also received the ‘Chirantana State Award’ from Chirantana Academy, Davanagere, Karnataka, and the ‘Karnataka Kalashree Gaurava Puraskara’ by the Karnataka Sangeetha Nritya Academy. Additionally, he was awarded the ‘Anokhe Tabla Vadak Prashasti’ by the Nataraja Sangeet Vidyala, Bagalakot, Karnataka.
