Born into a family steeped in traditional art and culture, Kalyan Mukherjee’s journey from learning tabla in the Lucknow gharana tradition to mastering the sarod under the guidance of legendary maestros has shaped him into a virtuoso. His narrative-driven approach beautifully captures life’s moments through intricate electrifying performances, making him a major force on the world music stage.
Kalyan Mukherjee was born in Calcutta, India, into a family deeply rooted in traditional art and culture. His father, Sri Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee, was a violinist and a disciple of the late sarod maestro Ustad Bahadur Khan. Kalyan began his musical journey learning tabla in the Lucknow gharana tradition as a child. He later took up sarod lessons with Sri Sachin Pal, a student of the late Shyam Ganguly, who himself studied under Baba Alauddin Khan.
Kalyan’s talent flourished under the guidance of Ustad Bahadur Khan, the blessed nephew and disciple of Ustad Alauddin Khan and cousin of the legendary Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. After Ustad Bahadur Khan’s passing, Kalyan continued to hone his skills under Pandit Ajoy Sinha Roy, another disciple of Baba Alauddin Khan of the Senia Maihar gharana.
Kalyan Mukherjee has performed at many prestigious concerts in India and abroad, captivating audiences with his exceptional talent.
PERFORMANCES & AWARDS
Eminent musician Kalyan Mukherjee has performed at many famous music festivals and venues around the world. His talent has also been showcased internationally at venues such as the Rotterdams Conservatoire in Holland, Mandapa Hall in Paris, and the Music University of Cape Town in South Africa.
He has participated in the centenary celebration of Chicago lectures organized by Ramakrishna Mission. His international acclaim is further highlighted by concerts in Holland, Germany, and Switzerland, as well as performances at the Sadarang Uchanga Sangeet Parishad in Bangladesh.
He also performed at various prestigious cultural and music festivals all over India, including at places like Golpark Ramakrishna Mission in Kolkata, I.T.C SRA (Kolkata), Salt Lake Cultural Association in Kolkata and Saptak in Ahmedabad.
Renowned musician Kalyan Mukherjee has been honored with prestigious awards for his contributions to music. He received the Sangeet Bivakar and Sangeet Ratna from the Bangiya Sangeet Parishad in Kolkata, recognizing his exceptional talent and dedication to the art of classical music. These accolades highlight his significant impact on the musical world and his commitment to preserving and promoting classical traditions.
