On 14 September 2021, the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare signed five Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) for pilot projects with CISCO, Ninjacart, Jio Platforms Limited, ITC Limited and NCDEX e-Markets Limited (NeML).
The MoUs form the initiatives of the Agriculture Ministry’s Digital Agriculture Mission for the period 2021-2025 and will be based on new technologies like AI, blockchain, remote sensing and GIS technology, use of drones and robots.
“Based on the pilot projects farmers will be able to make informed decisions on what crop to grow, what variety of seed to use and what best practices to adopt to maximize the yield. Recognising the importance of Digitisation in Agriculture the Department is creating a federated Farmers Database and building different services around this Database so as to build Digital Ecosystems of Agriculture,” the Ministry said.
This effort is to modernize the agriculture sector and will attach land records to the database of nearly 5.5 Crore farmers in the country.
Earlier, the Ministry has signed MoUs with Microsoft, Star Agribazar, Esri India Technologies Private Limited, Patanjali and Amazon for consolidating agri ecosystem across the value chain to empower the farmer using Data Analytics and establishing “National Agriculture Geo Hub”.
