CELEBRATING BENGAL’S CLASSICAL DANCE: THE GAUDIYA NRITYA EVENT AT THE INSTITUTE OF  HISTORICAL STUDIES, KOLKATA

In Kolkata, the Institute of Historical Studies hosted a remarkable event, a cultural feast for dance enthusiasts and history students alike. The Dr. H.L. Gupta Memorial Lecture for the year 2024-25 shone a spotlight on “Gaudiya Nritya: A Traditional Classical Dance of Bengal.” This event took place on Saturday, 30th November 2024.

The lecture delved into the rich heritage of Gaudiya Nritya, a classical dance form that embodies the cultural essence of Bengal. The topic, “Gaudiya Nritya: Banglar Oitijyobahi Shastriya Nritya,” underscored the dance’s historical significance and its role in preserving Bengal’s artistic traditions.

The event featured Professor Mahua Mukherjee,  retired professor from the Department of Dance at Rabindra Bharati University, as the esteemed speaker. Her extensive knowledge and passion for Gaudiya Nritya made her the perfect guide to explore this traditional art form.

Presiding over the event was Dr. Ranjan Kanti Jana, a fellow of the Institute of Historical Studies. His presence added a layer of academic gravitas to the proceedings, ensuring that the lecture was both informative and engaging. 

Professor Chittabrata Palit, Director of the Institute of Historical Studies, Kolkata graced the event.

The event was organized with technical support from Dr. Maidul Rahaman of KNU.

This lecture was not just an academic exercise; it was a celebration of Bengal’s cultural heritage. It offered a unique opportunity for attendees to immerse themselves in the beauty and history of Gaudiya Nritya, gaining insights from one of the foremost experts in the field.

Dr. Soumya Bhowmick and Ananya Ghosh, accompanied by Pandit Amitava Mukherjee on vocals, performed the Gaudiya Nritya before the audience, adding a mesmerizing touch to the event.
