LEYLA BRASHKA’S ART AWARENESS PROJECT
Leyla Brashka, a Mexican multidisciplinary artist, has been creating in diverse mediums for over a decade, focusing mainly on large-scale sculptures. During an art residency at Tasmai, she co-created her first Art Awareness Project with sculptor Saravana. They crafted a high-scale sculpture of a Drishti Mukham to symbolically give a Guardian to look after the ocean. Promenade Beach was fully cleaned with the help of the Pondy community, and part of the recovered materials were used to create the “Ocean Universal Ward” sculpture, which also serves as a trash can for people to dispose of their garbage.
CONTINUING HER ART AWARENESS JOURNEY
Since her first Art Awareness Project, Leyla Brashka has continued to engage in public space projects and art community initiatives. She has created projects like ‘Marine Metamorphosis’, which involve the community in ocean cleanups and recycling workshops. These efforts highlight environmental issues by using recovered materials to “dress up” sculptures of endangered marine animals, such as ‘A LIFE SIZE HUMP BACK WHALE’ displayed at the beach in San Pancho, Nayarit in Mexico.
“My work delves into our intrinsic relationship with nature, emphasizing the need to reconnect with Mother Earth. I constantly seek new media and approaches to bring ideas to life through art. Engaging in urban art projects and public spaces, I aim to raise awareness about crucial issues like marine pollution and our bond with nature. Through various social and community collaborative projects, I use art to foster interaction, collaboration and social transformation,” says renowned artist Leyla Brashka.
