QUAD SUMMIT CALLS FOR FREE AND OPEN INDO-PACIFIC

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga attended the QUAD Summit held in Washington on 24 September 2021.

“Quad represents four major democracies, who know how to get things and are up to the challenge,” Joe Biden said.

“We are liberal democracies and believe in a word order that favors freedom. And we believe in a free and open Indo-Pacific, because we know that’s what delivers a strong, stable and prosperous region,” Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison opened his strong message in the summit.

 “I’m confident that our cooperation under Quad, will ensure prosperity and peace in the Indo-Pacific and in the world,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.

“We stand for the rule of law, freedom of navigation and overflight, peaceful resolution of disputes, democratic values and territorial  integrity of states,”  a joint statement was issued after the talks.

The Quad announced agreements including many plans for monitoring climate change, supply chain initiative on semiconductors and supply of Covid-19 vaccines.

·        Quad nations will donate 1.2 million doses of Covid-19 Vaccine

·        Will address climate change and calls for reducing carbon footprints towards global net zero emissions by 2050.

·        Afghanistan’s soil must not be used for any terrorist activities and should not train or fund the terrorists.

·        100 graduate fellowships announced for promoting innovation and emerging technologies in the world.

On 15 September 2021, US, UK and Australia announced the formation of a new trilateral security partnership called AKUS (Australia-UK-US) which has been denounced by France and China.
