GAUDIYA NRITYA BHARATI PRESENTED GAUDIYA NRITYA – THE SANTHAL REBELLION AGAINST THE BRITISH

Gaudiya Nritya Bharati, Kolkata presented Gaudiya Nritya at Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC), Kolkata commemorating Santhal rebellion day on June 30.

 Santhals, the tribal people revolted against the East India Company’s oppressive zamindari system in Bengal Presidency during 1855-56. The Zamindars, moneylenders and the government officials raised  taxes and exploited the farmers, and this resulted in the rebellion, the first peasant revolt marked in the history of the pre-independence period.  And it was suppressed with a heavy hand. The Santhal rebellion was overshadowed by the great revolt of 1857.

The Classical dance, Gaudia Nritya, a composite art-form enriched with drama, poetry and rhythm  was held under the direction of Prof. Mahua Mukherjee, former Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts and Director, Centre for Studies in Dance Form of Bengal, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata and her husband  Pandit Amitava Mukherjee (Music Direction).
